Biogas is a source of renewable energy and more biogas plants are being built as a result of climate and energy policies. However, these have led to a significant increase in eutrophication-inducing nutrients in waterways in the Baltic Sea area.

We compiled and summarized the findings of a risk assessment country reports in a policy brief that covers treatment methods, legislative framework, risks, circular economy solution recommendations and improvements needed in the environmental impact assessment of plants and permit practices. The John Nurminen Foundation is planning a project in order to reduce the risks identified.
